The Government Says "No"
- Image via Wikipedia
Have you ever considered the career of a dental hygienist? If you have and are thinking about getting into it then you might have to do it immediately because there is a good chance you won’t be able to do it down the road. The United States government is taking away your right to go to school for such things. Are you confused? Let’s take a minute here to explain and hopefully we can get on the same page.
Many schools out there are trying their best to compete with the state schools. So what they have decided to do is offer programs for things such as a dental hygienist because the state schools don’t have that degree program. They also do things like have pharmacy technician programs which state schools don’t offer because neither program is necessary for employment in the field. It would only increase their chances.
So the government is not happy with the secondary schools that offer these programs. The tuition to these schools tend to be very high and that is a real issue for government because these schools are charging 30,000 dollars in fees for a job that will only make about the same. It means for the government that people are going to have a hard time paying back these loans. The government has decided that they simply will not loan out money to anyone who is in school for these programs.
So what does that mean in the long run? Either these schools are going to have to find a way to come down in their tuition fees or the government is going to have to decide to let these people get money for these programs. Given the fact that the government is always in a state of over spending it seems likely that they will not put back in the funding. It’s a shame for the people interested in those professions.
Looking for a Dentist
- Image via Wikipedia
It’s clear that most people are health conscious much more than they are dental conscious. People are managing their blood pressure and their weight but are paying very little attention to their teeth or the plaque that they have building up underneath. People don’t take nearly the time they should to help out their own cause this is what makes finding a dentist all the harder. There is nothing people are keeping up with to know the difference between a good dentist and a bad dentist.
The first thing you should look for when dealing with a dentist is if they take your insurance. Let’s face it, dental insurance isn’t at all as good as the health insurance you get. It covers very little of major dental issues but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t important to make sure that the dentist is in your network. That’s a key word: network. Just because a dentist will accept your insurance doesn’t mean he is preferred provider.
Once you know if the dentist will be within your price range then find out for yourself just how much the dentist practices. You want to go to a dentist with a flourishing practice as opposed to a dentist who is having trouble finding clients. The really good dentists have the best practices. Word of mouth is a big deal.
Also you should find out just how long the dentist has been in practice. This is a big deal. A dentist who has been around a long time has seen everything and won’t be surprised by another that could come up by a procedure. Conversely the younger dentist hasn’t seen that much but is also probably up to date on the newer theories and equipment used in the business. These are just a few of the things to think about when picking a dentist.
Getting Dental Patients To Understand

Being a dentist can be a rather difficult thing. It’s tough when a patient comes in who has clearly not cared about his or her teeth. You want to shake them or tell them to shape up because of the long term damage it can have on their heart, health, and financial concerns that poor dental care can have on them. So the real question becomes: how do you get your patient to start caring about their teeth the way they care about their favorite televisions shows.
Start Slow
Asking a patient to floss every single day after they have spent years not flossing at all would make for a rather big commitment to fill. Asking them to floss weekly is a much more safe and reachable goal. Once they see the benefits of it they might be willing to do it more. But you can’t go from 0 to 60. There has to be a nice middle ground.
Keep the Important Things
Once again it’s nice if your patient does a complete 180 and decides to do what you want them to do to it’s fullest but the truth of the situation is that there is only so much you can get them to do. Getting them to floss weekly and brush their teeth at least twice a day is a good start. Make sure they are brushing it in the morning and once again at night before bed. You can’t change everything so you have to change what you can. This is a good start.
Don’t Try Too Hard
Here’s the thing: you can’t get everyone to change. The only thing you can do is get them the right advice and then let them do what they want. You can’t help everyone. You can only do what you can do.
Lowering Dental Costs

There is nothing less fun than worrying about your dental insurance. You go to the dentist and you hold your breath waiting for the bill to arrive in the mail. You are sure that so much less has been covered than you ever thought. And it usually turns that they have covered so much less. It’s the worst feeling and there doesn’t seem to be anything you can do to fix it. The truth is that there are very few ways to keep your dental costs down. There are a few tricks of the trade that could keep you seeing lower dental bills.
Prevention
This is always the first line of defense. There is no substitute for good dental care. Nothing helps better than that. So what you need to do is to brush at least twice a day. Brush once in the morning and once at night. Floss three times a week and make sure to use mouthwash at least once a day. Doing these things will keep you, in most cases from having to go to the dentist and pay big money for big procedures.
In Network Dentists
Don’t pay attention to dentists who promise you they are deal with your insurance all the time. That may very well be the case but the truth of the matter is that you are looking for a dentist that actually is within your preferred network of dental providers. There is such a list and you can find out if your dentist qualifies under that network by simply calling your dental coverage provider and asking them. They will be more than happy to let you know if that is the case. These are just a few simple thing you can do to make sure that you are always getting the best dental care you can for the right amount of money.
The Initial Dental Visit

There isn’t a lot about going to the dentist that feels fun. It’s a bit of anxiety getting your check up or finding out that there might be something more serious wrong with your teeth but you should know that going to the dentist isn’t nearly as bad as you might make it out to be. As a matter of fact thanks to so many improvements in the technique of dentistry that you can go there and feel relatively confident that a procedure will leave minimal pain. And having a better understanding of these procedures will only help to relieve the anxiety of going.
The first thing that you go in for is an x-ray. This is not painful. Like most dental procedures it is more uncomfortable than anything else. You are giving clamps to bite down on and a radiation vest and then x-rays are made of your teeth. This is so the dentist can be sure of any big gum problems that might exist or if there are serious root canals that need to be addressed as well. This also lets the dentist know just where you are at with your wisdom teeth. Many have wisdom teeth that come in at different times so it’s important to keep a look out for them. Not removing your wisdom teeth could have great impact on the position of your other teeth.
Once they have done that the next part is the cleaning and the general inspection. This is where they scrap and pick at your teeth. This might feel uncomfortable but what they are really doing is getting rid of the plaque that has built up on your teeth over the past six months. Too much plaque can lead to serious heart problems if you don’t watch it. This is just a little taste of what it’s like the next time you are in a dentist office.
Understanding Dental Procedures

- Image via Wikipedia
One of the things that scares people the most is going to the dentist. For many they let it go for far too long before actually going to the dentist. This alone can make the dentist are far more aggravating experience then it ever needed to be. The real truth is that there are so many things that people hear about the dentist to scare them that they believe what’s in their heads before they actually believe what is the reality of the situation. So maybe it is time that some of those fears were put to rest. Let’s take a look at some of the dental procedures you might encounter and how those procedures can actually be a lot less scary than you might think.
Cavity Filling
This procedure is nothing at all to be concerned about. The filling never hurts. At most this is a procedure that will make you uncomfortable. It should not hurt. They do not prescribe pain killers for this. It’s an easy fix. If in the event that your filling were to fall out then there would be just as easy a follow up appointment to fix that as well.
Extraction
This is where things can get a little painful. A tooth extraction scares most people because it is taking a tooth from deep down in the roots and pulling it out. This is often a more painful experience than most would like but it is nowhere near as painful as you might think. The simple truth is with the advancements in pain relief prior to the appointment they can make you very comfortable during the extraction. Then afterward, depending on your pain level, they can give you pain killers to take while at home. Even the most painful of procedures is now nothing to be worried about.
What You Need to Know About Root Canals

- Image via Wikipedia
There are very few things in the world of dental health that strike as much fear into a person as the words “root canal.” If you asked someone what is the dental procedure they would least like to have done to themselves they would say without question that the root canal is on the top of their list. But those words aren’t nearly as scary as you think. The truth is that those words mean nothing if you are having the procedure done in the hands of a competent dentist. Still, so much of the fear has to do with the unknown and what you don’t know will just about scare you. So here are some things to keep in mind about the root canal before you go in to have it done.
Multiple Appointments
This might seem like a real pain but it’s a necessary evil that will keep you from having to take on too much in one day. The first appointment is simply about saving your root. That will be the appointment where you experience the most pain. With that being said the pain is not anywhere near as bad as you might make it out to be. It’s actually rather easy to deal with. The next few appointments are about saving the rest of the tooth and putting the crown on it if need be. These multiple appointments will usually not result in pain, only discomfort while in the dentists chair.
Insurance Pays
Most insurances will pay for half of what it costs. You can figure the average cost of a root canal to be around 1000 dollars so that means you would end up having to pay around 500 dollars. It’s a steep cost but there really is no choice. You can’t go around losing teeth.
Flex Pay for Dental Bills

- Image by LividFiction via Flickr
If you are worried about paying the rising cost of your medical bills then join a growing club of people who are finding it harder and harder to come up with the money to pay their medical bills. The truth be told the one expense that no one ever plans for is their dental expenses. It’s not something people plan for. You don’t assume you’ll need to have a tooth pulled or get a crown or a cap and when the time comes it ends up biting you right where it really hurts: the wallet. This is unfortunate because dental expenses don’t have to keep you hyperventilating. If you enroll is something called a flexible spending account now your dental bills could be easier on you than you have ever imagined.
The way that a flex spending account works is it’s something either set up through your bank or your employer and you can set aside a set amount of money(with a maximum limit on there as well) and that money can be used for fixed medical or dental cost. So let’s say at the beginning of the year you wanted to make sure your kids were watched out for as far as the dentist goes, you might set aside 1000 dollars. You know you will have a deductible and you know you will have other expenses such as cleanings and possible extractions.
With the money you set aside in you flex account you can use that to pay toward those expenses. What’s nice is its pre tax money. Meaning the government can’t touch it so it’s less money the government can tax you on. There is one catch, what you don’t use, you lose so make sure you plan ahead carefully. Still, using a flexible spending account just makes sense.
Raising Kids With Good Dental Health

- Image via Wikipedia
Having kids is really expensive. You will never run into a parent who will disagree with that statement. Some parents will argue that the cost of a child might be too expensive to handle at times. Somehow you manage to find a way to keep them happy and healthy in spite of the rising cost of everything all over the world. One of the things that doesn’t make raising a kid any easier is the cost of their dental care. It’s something a parent often doesn’t prepare enough for. So if you are parent with little kids and you are interested in keeping them healthy and happy when it comes to the dental care, how do you do that and not lose yourself financially?
First thing you can do is teach your kids from a very early age about the importance of dental care. You must make it a habit that they do their best to brush their teeth twice a day and that they floss regularly. The best way to enforce such behavior is to be good enough to lead by example. If you are unable to do that you will find that there is a good chance your kids will pick up the same lazy habits that you have.
The next thing you can do is to make sure you build a good relationship with your dentist. A child who is seen by the dentist on a regular basis can be sure that they will be likely to encounter less problems than their fellow kids who do not see a dentist on a regular basis. Making sure they are seen will help them fight off disease, like gum disease. There is no absolute way to make sure that your child has perfect dental health but if you follow some simple rules you can assure they are more likely to live happy dental lives.
